From Jon Burton:

Had some random thoughts about the Pirates opener yesterday. I didn’t realize how slow-footed Sean Casey is…..I can see why he hits into so many double plays. Maybe Jim Tracy should bat him fourth and move Jason Bay to third in the lineup…..Oliver Perez pitched very well and you can almost hear the collective sigh of relief from the Buccos top brass….make no mistake about it: Perez is the team’s ace, not Zach Duke, at least not yet. Perez really infuriated Tracy when he grounded out on a 3-0 pitch that was up around his eyeballs with the game still close and the Pirates in desperate need of baserunners. Can’t blame the skipper for that….it goes against everthing Tracy preaches about and even the pitchers need more disclipline at the plate. My buddy Mark Madden criticized Tracy for using Matt Capps in relief yesterday….have to say I agree with him. That was not the time to send a young relief pitcher to make his Major League debut, especially for a team that’s had 13 straight losing seasons and was in need of a spark to open the season.
